Taverners too good for St Peters. Again.

Hilly and Katsy

Friday 17/2/17 saw the Lord’s Taverners (SA Branch) play the St Peter’s College 1st XI in a T20 fixture.

The Taverners restricted Saints to 155 after a total of 200+ seemed possible.

Henry Hewitson (4 wickets) and Tom Hastwell (2) bowled superbly removing the Saints dangermen, with Steven Hill (2 wickets) turning the tide in the Taverner's favour after it looked like Saints were about to pile on the runs.

Hilly’s efforts didn’t stop with the ball. His fielding was nothing short of phenomenal (after dropping the Saints captain on the 2nd ball of the day). While his batting in the last 5 overs secured us a highly unlikely victory.

At no stage did the Taverners panic in the run chase. Blake Gutsche (who won the 2017 Lord’s Taverners scholarship) opened the batting with poise for 18. Nick Cook contributed a valuable 33. He and Luke van Kempen (46) got the innings rolling. And then it was left to some lusty hitting by Man of the Match, Hill (35*) at the end to steal the show, and break the hearts of the Saints 1st XI in the process.

A surprising feature of the Taverners game was the high standard of fielding. Given the average was well north of 40, some incredible catches were taken – notably, LVK, Swale and Hill. While the glove work of Alex Katsaros was sublime; helping himself to 2 stumpings.
